Anti-Ageing Skincare Ingredients: What Actually Works (A Herbalist Explains)

You've seen the promises on the packaging. "Clinically proven." "Visibly younger in 7 days." Anti-ageing products are advertised everywhere — but what's actually inside those bottles, and does any of it work?
As a trained herbalist with years of experience in natural skincare formulation, I want to cut through the marketing noise and give you the honest truth about the ingredients that genuinely help your skin regain its glow — and the ones you should be avoiding entirely.
Formulation Is Everything
Here's something the big cosmetic brands don't want you to think about: a product can be built around one hero ingredient while containing 20 other toxic fillers — synthetic preservatives, petroleum derivatives, and artificial fragrances that have never been properly tested for long-term safety.
Worse, some of these toxic ingredients accumulate in your body over time.
A simple rule of thumb: if the ingredient list is long, full of unpronounceable chemical names with numbers attached, put it back on the shelf. Great skincare doesn't need to be complicated — it needs to be clean, bioavailable, and correctly formulated.
Vitamin E — Real vs Fake
Vitamin E is one of the most important anti-ageing nutrients for your skin, but there's a critical distinction most brands gloss over.
Natural vitamin E is listed as tocopherol on an ingredient label. Synthetic vitamin E appears as dl-tocopherol or vitamin E acetate — and studies show it is 53% less absorbed by the skin. You're essentially paying for an ingredient your skin can barely use.
Natural vitamin E does the following:
- Builds skin elasticity and repairs damaged cells
- Plumps and moisturises the epidermis
- Absorbs UV light and plays a key role in photoprotection
- Prevents free radical damage caused by UV exposure
- Reduces inflammation in the skin
It's worth noting that vitamin E concentrations in the dermis naturally decline with age — which is exactly why replenishing it topically matters.
The best way to get natural vitamin E into your skin is through organic plant oils that are naturally rich in it. Rosehip, Argan, and Baobab oils are excellent sources, and they also carry high fatty acid profiles that protect and repair skin cells at a deeper level.
Our Age Defying Vitamin E Serum (30ml) contains natural vitamin E alongside a blend of organic oils, Frankincense, and Myrrh — both of which are exceptionally high in antioxidants and have been used in natural medicine for centuries.
Hyaluronic Acid — The Anti-Ageing Molecule
Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally in your body, and it's one of the most remarkable molecules in human biology. It acts as a cushioning and lubricating agent in your skin and joints — but like so many things, its levels decline with age.
Here's what makes it so powerful for skin:
- One molecule of hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1,000 times its weight in moisture — drawing hydration deep into the skin
- It actively supports collagen synthesis, which is the foundation of firm, healthy skin
- It benefits all skin types and profiles, not just mature skin
However, not all hyaluronic acid products are equal. Molecule size matters enormously — larger molecules cannot penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and offer only surface-level hydration. And if hyaluronic acid isn't in a water-based formulation, it can actually draw moisture out of your skin rather than into it.
You should also look for plant-sourced hyaluronic acid rather than animal-derived versions.
Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum contains two particle sizes for both surface and deep-layer hydration, is water-based, pH-balanced, and preserved only with eco-certified, plant-based preservatives. No hidden toxins.

Vitamin C — The Antioxidant Powerhouse
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it works by reversing oxidative damage in skin cells — the kind of damage that leads to pigmentation, dullness, and premature ageing.
It's particularly effective for:
- Uneven skin tone and pigmentation
- Sun-damaged or ageing skin
- Brightening and reviving a dull complexion
The catch with vitamin C is stability. It degrades quickly when exposed to light and air, which means many vitamin C products on the market are largely ineffective by the time you use them.
Our Vitamin C Serum uses a time-release formulation with the most stable form of vitamin C available — so it remains active on your skin for longer and delivers real results.
Aloe Vera — The Underrated Skin Builder
Aloe vera is often thought of as a simple soothing ingredient, but its benefits go much deeper than that.
- Builds moisture within skin cells and delivers easily absorbed minerals and vitamins
- Strengthens capillaries, making your skin more resilient to allergens and environmental stressors
- Supports overall skin barrier function
The key here is sourcing. Always look for organic aloe vera — conventionally grown aloe can carry pesticide residues that are entirely counterproductive to a clean skincare routine.
Our formulations use organic aloe vera sourced from the West Coast of South Africa — as local and clean as it gets.
The Bottom Line
You don't need a 12-step routine or a cabinet full of products. You need the right ingredients, correctly formulated, from clean sources.
Look for:
- ✅ Natural tocopherol (not dl-tocopherol or vitamin E acetate)
- ✅ Plant-sourced hyaluronic acid in two molecular sizes
- ✅ Stable, time-release vitamin C
- ✅ Organic aloe vera
- ✅ Short, readable ingredient lists
- ❌ Synthetic preservatives, petroleum, artificial fragrance
